4. Nominate 7 bloggers that you love and link to their blogs.

Here we go:

1. I am an only child, but I definitely want at least two kids.

I recently found out that the Library of Congress was uploading their photo archive to Flickr and thought that it was absolutely the coolest idea.   As a world traveler & lover of travel photographs, I first graviated towards their Photochrom Travel Views set of images. These gorgeous images are from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. So far they just have images from Scandinavia, but state that they will be adding more, including views of the Middle East during that time period. The photos are just outstanding and offer such an incredible glimpse into life back in those days, which was not that long ago.

I was delighted to find some images from places I’ve actually visited in Norway and one image of the ship port in Sweden. I’d visited those places when I was a teenager – my parents took me on lots of amazing vacations when I was a kid and I got to see so many things that others had only seen in textbooks. Or now, on Flickr. Here are some of the awesome photographs that I found from places I’ve seen in person.

And from my own, very incredibly ancient photo collection on this website, which desperately, desperately needs a revamp once I have the time to re-scan all the photographs that I have awful scans of from high school and college, here is an image I took of the cruise ship I traveled on when I visited Norway, Sweden, and other parts of Scandinavia as a teenager: the Queen Elizabeth 2. I am quite proud to have had the opportunity to have sailed on the QE2 when I was 14, staying in the Queen’s Grill (first class) for my trip. The QE2 is regarded as one of the finest ocean liners in the world, and traveling on her was an incredible experience that I will never forget!

I was going to post my image of The Little Mermaid statue from Copenhagen, Denmark – but it’s just so awful that I will refrain. LOL. The scan is terrible and the picture isn’t so great either. If you must see it, it’s in the siren.org photography archive and it was taken some time in the late 90’s. One day I’ll find all my film from these trips (it’s at my parents’ house) and scan all my photos from my travels to Europe and all over the world.

Earth Hour is underway in many parts of the world, and in a couple of hours, it will be Earth Hour time here in South Florida.

My friend Steven Frischling, a corporate/editorial photographer and travel strategist, is currently in Amsterdam on business. Of course, he posted some photographs that he took at the Amsterdam airport when Earth Hour started. As Steven describes, an airport cannot completely shut off all of its lights for obvious reasons, but it’s neat to see the “secondary lights” turned off for this special event.

Please check out all the photos that Steven posted, and also be sure to add his blog to your RSS reader. He gives tons of awesome tips for traveling, no matter what your profession is!

If you weren’t aware, I wanted to notify you of a global movement, a call to action: today, March 28th, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, whatever your location, is Earth Hour. If you’re home, take a moment to turn out the lights and participate in this movement!

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations. VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

If you’re anything like me, you get a ton of magazines in the mail each month. I get a lot of free ones, because I managed to sign up for a bunch of baby and parenting magazines when I was pregnant, and they keep sending them to me, for free.. anyway, after I read through them, I usually feel pretty bad just dumping them because it seems like such a waste. And as for the non-free ones, I definitely feel bad dumping them because 1. they cost money, and 2. they’re nice to look at and deserve to get more enjoyment out of them than just one read (even if all I do is read it one).

Tonight, I found a really interesting solution – and a way to investigate other magazines that I think look neat! I found this website called MagCycle which seems to be launching in the near future. MagCycle proposes recycling your magazines by swapping them with others who are interested. What a great way to expand the reach of a magazine and add a bit more “green” into your life. Their motto on the bottom of their website is: “More reading, less paper, happier planet. Together, we can make a difference.” I like it!

This website is SO cool. If you love Flickr and love colors, it is the site for you. All you need to do is select the color combinations you’re interested in, and it will find images on Flickr that match the colors you’ve selected. How awesome is that? Check out the one I’ve tried below.

I’m looking forward to flying SWA this June when Adrian and I shoot a wedding in the Chicago area!

I was just checking the whois records for siren.org and realized that my website just celebrated 11 years – it was registered on March 2, 1998, when I was only 15 years old! wow- by the time I’m 31, I’ll have had my website for longer than I haven’t!!

for kicks, I checked the wayback machine archive site and found that it recorded a LOT of one of the first versions of my website from back in December 2008. I am amazed at what is still there!

Here is the main page – as you can see, I tried to sell stuff online via Amazon’s Affiliate’s program, which I assume must have just been getting started back then, and I also tried selling my old CDs, books, and random stuff through the “store” link.

If you click on “speak” you’ll see my “speak board” that I created aka “forums”. In reality, a real ubb forum was too advanced for me to program, so I modified a guestbook perl script and built up a pretty active message board on my site, which lasted for a long time. I still miss those days…. long before Facebook, people came to MY website to chat with each other! wow, what an ego trip for a 15-year-old girl!! LOL! it only has the last archive up – clicking on the other ones doesn’t do anything – but I actually do have them all archived on my computer, still…. I found them a while back buried in my hard drive archives. :)

you can also see such hilarities as my “web design company” (lolz) and my web page en español, which features a tribute to Gloria Estefan. how embarrassing!! haha!!

if you have a website that has also lived a long life, you should check out the wayback machine, too!

Long, long before I got pregnant, I found this wonderful shop on Etsy called BellaBlu Designs. Christy (the proprietor) sells gorgeous stationery and onesies, tote bags, and other art pieces that are appliqued with various things, mostly dogs and other animals. Her dachshund onesies are really popular, and they feature a cute doxie that wraps around the side of the outfit. Since I am a huge dachshund lover, I knew I would have to have one whenever I ended up having a baby – someday.

When I learned that I was pregnant, I looked at Christy’s store again, excitedly waiting to find out if I was going to have a boy or girl so I could place my order. When Adrian and I learned we would be having a boy, I ordered the cutest little onesie with a blue and brown patterned dachshund which came with a matching burpcloth.  I also got a doxie appliqued tote bag which I really love. I have been following Christy’s blog and store website religiously, enjoying all of the lovely things that she creates.

Recently, she created a Facebook page and had a contest on her blog to show off the new look and branding. I entered the contest, and Christy was sweet enough to give out awards to everyone who participated, in addition to giving out a grand prize. While I may not have won the grand prize, I got a sweet email from Christy the other day letting me know that I could select a onesie or set of stationery of my choice from her shop. I chose another onesie for Zachary, since he grew out of the size I ordered quite a while back! This time I got one in a bigger size so that he will be able to wear it a lot and grow into it.  Zachary loves our doxie Maya so I’m sure he will be excited for another doxie onesie. :)

Yay!! I’m so excited that I won something, which never happens… and it just happened to be from one of my very favorite online stores!!

Through the miracle of StumbleUpon, I found this neat little site, I do dog tricks, that lets you type in different tricks for the digital dog to perform. It’s really cute. Try telling the dog to twirl, sneeze, jump, circle, kiss, paw, lie down, play dead.. it can do a lot! The site is run by Heartgard, which is the same heartworm prevention medication that we give to Maya each month. Neat!
